CVM Reunion: November 2005

This past Sunday, I had a little reunion with my former computer science classmates from Cégep du Vieux-Montréal. Once in a while, I try to organize a gathering with my former colleagues just to catch up & stay in contact with everyone and also to have some fun!

This time around, it was no different! My classmates came over to baptize our famous kitchen, celebrate the return of Martin who spent the last few months in Africa teaching and, oh yes, have a LAN party :)

It was a fun filled day; we played a few games such as Diablo II, Quake III and Enemy Territory. Thanks to everyone who came. It was my pleasure to have you over. It was a blast!

Here are a few snap shots:

Me kicking ass! Yeah!!! ;)

See you next time everyone.

My web based games

About a year ago, I was developing web games at school but never released it on my porfolio site. Thought it would be great to share these projects I did with everyone.

The first game I have for you is Daleks:

Point of the Game

In this game, you must help that ingenious time traveler, Doctor Who , avoid ever-growing swarms of his arch-enemies: The Daleks . You are armed only with your trusty Sonic Screwdriver, an ability to teleport to random destinations, and your unrivaled intellect.

Luckily, what the Daleks have in numbers, they lack in intelligence. In their reckless pursuit, the Daleks can crash into one another, leaving piles of rubble . Any Daleks trying to move through rubble will also be destroyed.

The Keyboard
The game is entirely keyboard controlled. All available commands are listed below.
  • Movement: Move the Doctor by using the numeric keypad. Pressing "5" will pass for the turn.
  • Teleport: You can teleport by hitting "T". Note that you have no control over your destination. Use this ability wisely or you may find yourself ignominiously crushed under the wheels of the pursuing Daleks.
  • Sonic Screwdriver: Hit "S" to use one of your sonic screwdrivers. These handy (plot) devices only work once, but will destroy any Daleks immediately adjacent to you. The number of remaining screwdrivers is displayed at the bottom of the screen. Additional screwdrivers are awarded upon completion of a level.

Scoring

As you progress to higher levels, the Daleks destroyed are worth increasing numbers of points. No score is given for Daleks destroyed with the sonic screwdriver.

The next web based game I have is Frogger! Actually, this project was actually an exam we had. All the graphical elements were provided, however we had to dynamically build and animate the game in JavaScript. It was an interesting challenge, but I never had the time and heart to complete the game and add collision detection.

Lookout in a week or two on this blog as I try to implement the online web based game, Galax, we have built at school.

Please note, all these games are not cross-browser compatible. They were built for IE6 and the primary focus of our web courses was set on programming and not design compatibility.

Point, Shoot, Admire

Point, Shoot, Admire is my newest addition to my blog. It's a photoblog!

What is a photoblog you may ask? A photoblog is a website whose primary content is photographs displayed in a log format and allows visitors to leave comments.

So come on down and take a look, as I'll be putting my favorite shots at the following site: http://photos.parillo.ca

I also have built a photo album site of my personal pictures. (Message me if you want the link)

Thanks Matt for the inspiration! Without, I don't think I would have explored and jumped at all these interests in photography and build all of these blog sites as fast as I am doing right now!

Arcadia Festival 2005

I attended the first annual Arcadia festival over the weekend! ARCADIA festival is the one and only public event created for video game enthusiasts from across Canada. Its goal was to bring together a host of gamers, both novices and experts a like, and provide them with a forum to explore the world of video games while fostering contact and communication among participants in a gaming zone.
I Had a good a pretty good time. I'm pretty happy to come off winner at my nhl 2006 hockey game i played on the gamecube.
Thanks again Marc for the tickets! And thanks for coming Rocco and Ekram! ;)

The festival took place at the CEPSUM forum in Montreal from Nov 4th to the 6th. The arena was divided into the following sections:

  • The gaming zone (xbox, playstation, nintendo): Gamers had access to a massive variety of current games and also had the privilege of testing new products.
  • The flashback zone (coleco, atari, nes, genesis): Retro theme zone with scarce and classic consoles such as Atari, NES, Sega, Neo Geo, Coleco, 3D0.
  • The pc zone: 40 pc stations linked to gaming mayhem! :)
  • The arcademique zone: Gaming conferences and demos
  • The Arcadia scene: Entertainment centre with live music dj performances, celebrity challenges and DDR (Dance Dance revolution) competitions.
